Chronology of cameras Zeiss Ikon
The Zeiss Ikon Miroflex is a folding reflex camera that was introduced at the very end of the Contessa-Nettel period just before the merge to form Zeiss Ikon, in 1926. Zeiss Ikon would continue delivering it from the factory of Contessa Works until around 1934, and after that the camera vanishes from Zeiss Ikon catalogues. Despite its high engineering and manufacture quality, the camera concept was becoming obsolete for the photographic industry panorama of the 1930s. But the Miroflex was not a late idiosyncratic invention, as it had been delivered since 1908 in slightly different configurations, first as the Schaap Senco Folding Reflex (1908) and then the Nettel Reflex-Nettel (1913).
Zeiss Ikon mainly upgraded the front standard to a leather covered large plate with rise and cross movements controlled by a single button, whereas the Contessa-Nettel used a more conventional wooden front with side bars and removable lensboard as in the Deckrullo. The wire frame finder for sports viewing also changed from being hinged to sliding from behind the lensboard. Mixed models can be found, where Contessa-Nettel parts are included on the ZI type, as McKeown refers (pg. 1055).
The specimen figured here is an early Zeiss Ikon Miroflex model B (859/7) for 9 x 12 plates. It is well identified as a Zeiss Ikon camera, but the front is Contessa-Nettel as described above. So, it is an intermediate stage camera from probably 1926 or 1927. The focal plane shutter delivers speeds in the range 3 to 1/2000 plus B and T. The fitted lens is a Carl Zeiss Tessar with a focal length of 15 cm and maximum aperture of 4.5.
